01 / Meaning

ITALIAN · NOUN · MASCULINE

A public water bus that carries passengers along the canals and across the lagoon of Venice, usually following a scheduled route.

/vapoˈretto/ · Plural: vaporetti · Italian: il vaporetto

A little steam. A lasting name.

Vaporetto comes from Italian vapore (steam) and the diminutive suffix -etto. The name recalls the early steam-powered boats. Today, the word describes Venice’s public water buses even though they no longer rely on steam.

Santa Lucia station → Rialto

One boat, no change: ACTV Line 1 towards Lido S.M.E. Get off at Rialto, after Rialto Mercato.

Timetable checked 19 October 2026 · effective 14 September 2026. Check notices and the departure display on the day.

1FERROVIA → RIALTO → S. MARCO → LIDO S.M.E.
  1. 01

Leave the station for the Grand Canal

Exit Venezia Santa Lucia onto the canal-side forecourt. Look for the ACTV stop name “Ferrovia”. You do not need to cross Ponte degli Scalzi for this departure.

  2. 02

    Buy a waterborne ticket

Use an ACTV/Venezia Unica ticket office, machine or the official app. For this journey, choose the 75-minute Rete Unica ticket or a valid waterborne pass. A road-only ticket is not enough.

ACTV app purchase & QR validation instructions ↗
  3. 03

Read the direction before the pier letter

Find Line 1 towards Lido S.M.E. via Rialto / S. Marco, not towards P.le Roma. In the checked timetable, Ferrovia E serves departures 05:04–20:48; B serves 21:08–23:44. Check your exact departure column and the live display.

  4. 04

Validate the ticket you actually bought

For a physical travel card, use the validator before boarding and at transfers. For an app ticket, activate it and scan its live QR code as instructed by ACTV. Wait for the success message; buying a ticket alone does not validate it. In the app, press the QR reader button, present the live code and wait for the green success screen. Do not use a screenshot of the QR code.

  5. 05

    Watch the stop names

Ferrovia → Riva de Biasio → S. Marcuola–Casinò → S. Stae → Ca’ d’Oro → Rialto Mercato → Rialto. “Rialto Mercato” and “Rialto” are different stops.

  6. 06

    Leave at Rialto

A checked daytime example is Ferrovia E 10:00 → Rialto B 10:19, about 19 minutes aboard, excluding waiting. Other departures and arrival piers differ. Recheck the return direction separately.
